Offices in London

Caxtons is one of the largest independent firms of chartered surveyors in the South East. Since 1990 they have helped residents and companies with property investment, management, letting and surveying services.

They believe in providing a service tailored to their customer’s immediate needs and helping them formulate longer-term strategies while minimising cost and maximising potential. Their goal is to build lifetime business partnerships by providing a first-class service.

Key Outcomes:

  • Upgrade existing server operating system licensing
  • Avoid the security risk associated with using an end of life operating system
  • Avoid unnecessary expenditure

The Challenge

Caxtons was faced with end of life operating systems on its servers, which needed to be maintained pending a planned upgrade of their core systems the following year. The company was either looking at an expensive bill for the transitional period, or continuing with out of date operating systems, which would be a security risk.

As a result, they were facing the concern of having operating systems on their servers that had reached end of life and would become a security risk, as they no longer received security updates from the vendor.

Caxtons required a solution to resolving the end of life issues without unnecessary expenditure to the business.

Due to the planning back in 2012/13 when Air IT installed our current systems, we were licenced for supported Microsoft operating systems which could see us through to the full implementation of our cloud based products, alleviating the risk of unsupported software whilst maintaining our current hardware infrastructure. The migration over several weeks went as planned and our users took to the newer versions of software very quickly. Caxtons were very pleased with the quality of the work carried out and look forward to working with Air IT, not only for the normal ongoing support but for future plans to move our applications to the cloud at the end of 2020.

The Air IT Approach

Air IT’s solution was to utilise the existing server hardware to keep expenditure down. A new solution, such as Office 365 would have fixed the issue but would have been expensive and Caxtons didn’t have the need to change their systems, just update them.

Air IT used their relationship with Microsoft to upgrade existing licensing to avoid the purchase of newer licensing, saving thousands of pounds to the business.

The Outcome

Thanks to this solution, Caxtons was able to avoid the security risk associated with using an end of life operating system and avoid unnecessary expenditure on a new system.

InfoTech saved Caxtons £13,000 in hardware costs and £25,000 over a year for not needing additional licencing, making a grand total of £38,000 saved.

The operating systems are no longer end of life so Caxtons is no longer at risk from security vulnerabilities occurring on their servers because of using out of date products and they made a considerable financial saving.
