National Apprenticeship Week is celebrated annually across the UK in order to acknowledge apprentices and encourage more people from all walks of life to take up apprenticeships. We caught up with some of our current and former apprentices from across the Air IT Group to find out their thoughts.

National Apprenticeship Week 2022

Apprenticeship achievements

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, current and former apprentices across the Air IT Group have been sharing their experiences with us on AirNet, our company-wide Intranet. We thought we’d share just a few of those stories on our blog to celebrate their achievements and give you an insight into life as an Air IT apprentice.

Sophie – Apprentice Project Coordinator

Sophie is our newest apprentice, having joined Air IT Nottingham in January 2022.

What is your role?

I am a project coordinator completing a Level 4 Associate Project Management apprenticeship.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice?

The best thing about being an apprentice is being able to earn and learn in a great working environment, it makes learning far more fun as you can put it into practice!

What’s your advice to anyone considering an IT apprenticeship?

My advice to anyone considering an IT apprenticeship is to definitely go for it, you can learn a lot about technology which affects our lives and why it is continually becoming a more prominent feature in society.

Fraser – Marketing Executive

Fraser joined our North West office on a technical apprenticeship and is now part of the Marketing team, where he applies his technical knowledge to marketing campaigns and has been able to embrace his passion for design.

What roles have you had during your time at Air IT?

I started as a 1st Line Technical Apprentice in 2015, then became a 1st Line Technical Analyst, NOC Analyst, and now a Marketing Executive.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice?

The hands-on experience gained on an apprenticeship, both technically and on an interpersonal level, amount to skills and knowledge that cannot be taught in a classroom. Apprenticeships allow a way onto the job ladder while continuing with education. I felt supported and heard throughout my apprenticeship journey. I was comforted by the support for personal struggles experienced at the time, allowing me to get the most from my apprenticeship education.

Why do you like working at Air IT?

Working at Air IT has allowed me to explore what career I want for myself. Air IT allows for ample opportunity to grow and expand the knowledge of colleagues into the industries and subsets of technology that they have a passion for.

Sam – Service Desk Analyst

Sam started his IT apprenticeship at our North West office in November 2021.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice?

Constantly learning new concepts and applying knowledge to work.

What attracted you to IT as a profession?

I was attracted to the problem-solving aspect of the job – having to use your brain to solve problems opposed to just doing repetitive work.

What would your advice be to anyone considering an IT apprenticeship?

Take your time to learn everything as there is a lot to learn at first. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – the more, the better.

Alex – Sales Manager

Alex from the Nottingham office has been with Air IT for almost 11 years, making his way from service desk to sales manager.

What roles have you had during your time at Air IT?

I started as a Remote Support Technician whilst completing my apprenticeship. After working on the service desk for a while and supporting clients, I soon realised my skill set was well suited to client services and was supported and encouraged to progress my career in this way. I became an Account Manager, then Business Development Manager, and have recently become Sales Manager.

What attracted you to IT as a profession?

I’ve always had an interest in technology from a young age and identified it as a thriving industry with plenty of opportunities. After working on the service desk for a while and supporting clients, I soon realised my skill set was well suited to client services and was supported and encouraged to progress my career in this way.

What would your advice be to anyone considering an IT apprenticeship?

Be patient, commit, work hard and make the most of the opportunities that come your way.

Simge – Tier 1 Helpdesk Analyst

Simge, from our Kent office, started her apprenticeship in June 2019 as an Infrastructure Technician and is now a Tier 1 Helpdesk Analyst.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice?

I had tried the university route and it wasn’t for me. I love the fact I was able to work, gain experience and complete a qualification at the same time when doing an apprenticeship.

What attracted you to IT as a profession?

I’ve always been into computers and fixing stuff so I knew I wanted to get into IT at an early age, there’s so much we can do in IT by just clicking a button. It’s amazing!

What would your advice be to anyone considering an IT apprenticeship?

Time Management!!!! Make sure you make the most of every minute in each day, because, no lie, it’s definitely a struggle juggling a full time job and still keeping up with coursework but also the best feeling when you know you’ve done it.

What is the best thing about working for Air IT?

The growing company, being able to reach out to anyone if/when you have a question is really nice.

What do apprentices bring to the business?

We asked some of our leadership team for their thoughts on what apprentices bring to the business and the difference they make.

James Healey, COO, said:

Our apprentices are a brilliant asset to Air IT, they bring a fresh perspective and dynamic to the team. They live and breathe our culture as they are immersed within the business from day one, and are committed to the bigger picture of empowering people to succeed through technology. The skills they are learning are crucial as the demand for technology services continues to grow. Bringing on apprentices also provides new opportunities for existing colleagues to manage, coach and lead the next generation.

Air IT has had a lot of success with apprentices and many have stayed with us over the years – in Nottingham alone, almost 15% of the workforce has emerged through the apprenticeship scheme. Several offices across the Group offer apprenticeship programmes and we’re really proud to be investing in the future in this way, and to promote that sense of continuous learning as part of our culture.

Lucas Pilkington, Service Desk Team Leader (North West), said:

Apprentices bring lots of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. They have no preconceived notions and represent a clean slate, allowing us to nurture the exact talent our MSP requires to provide Best in Class service for our clients.

Apprentices are problem-solving from day one – from early on in their development, our apprentices are able to contribute to the team’s goals.

Nadine Southern, Director (North West), said:

We wouldn’t be where we are today without our Apprenticeship Programme. Ten years ago we made the decision to invest in Apprentices to help incubate the talent we need in-house.  Our programme has been truly transformational for the business and corresponds with our culture of continuous learning. It’s been a sustained strategy where everyone, the apprentice, the wider team and our clients reap rewards.

We’re incredibly proud of those who have started their careers here and of who those have progressed to other roles within the business, building on strong foundations.
